The Challenge

In my last article, I described how to successfully manage Windows desktops in an enterprise environment. Perhaps the biggest challenge that faces any of us is to keep the anti-virus definition files current, not to mention the monthly and sometimes weekly OS and web browser security patches. Now stack application version and release updates on top of this and you will find this is a full time job all in itself.

Unfortunately, due to the number of customized applications and images that reside in such an environment, it is usually not practical to deploy and apply a patch or upgrade out of the box. One must consider what variations of DLL files, drivers, and application-specific configurations reside on each individual box. Simply speaking, this means you need a tool that will package the patch or upgrade in such a way to install properly when deployed to targeted PCs.

MaSai was established in 2002 by George Plummer, a software engineer who is well versed in re-packaging and installer tools. MaSai is headquartered in New Zealand and is relatively new to the market, but do not let that hold you back. In most cases, it is the new players on the block that bring new ideas and innovation to the forefront.

First-Hand Experience

My research determined that although this company is young, it is built on a solid foundation of engineers with a wealth of knowledge and experience in developing packaging and set-up utilities. As I have stated before, I have been in this business longer than I wish to admit, but these years have provided me with some valuable lessons. One, proven time and again, warns that if an application is not intuitive and easy to use right out of the box, then in all probability, it was developed by engineers with little or no real life experience.

I am pleased to say that the GUI is easy to comprehend and navigate, simplifying the execution of tasks you need to accomplish. After downloading a trial copy and taking a test drive, it was very obvious to me that the MaSai engineers developed this product like they were planning to use it themselves.

In Closing Simply speaking, MaSai Installer is an intelligent, powerful, and intuitive packaging tool that is easy to use and is sure to speed your development time to create packages for those pesky OS patches that seem to spread like rabbits as each month goes by. You can't go wrong for $250. Check it out yourself with a trial copy; you won't be disappointed.
