ELM Enterprise Manager 3.1 Monitoring Solutions for the Microsoft Windows Server 2003 platform
Windows Server administrators know that keeping systems up and running at peak performance is essential. Unexpected downtime can mean unhappy users, interruptions in corporate communications, and even lost business. Though Windows is continually improving with regard to manageability, it doesn´t manage itself. Administrators need a way to proactively manage their Windows Server infrastructure in real time without adding a lot of overhead to the system, using tools that are complete and not overly complex.
That´s where ELM Enterprise Manager from TNT Software can help. ELM is a multithreaded, COM-based client/server application specifically designed for minimal system overhead, minimal network impact and maximum visibility and monitoring. Using ELM Enterprise Manager, Windows Server administrators can proactively monitor their servers´ event logs, send and receive alerts when certain events occur, collect and monitor health and performance, and even take corrective action when things go wrong.
The first step to resolving any problem is becoming aware of the problem. Without ELM Enterprise Manager, Windows Server administrators have several ways of learning about system problems, all with serious limitations:
- They can wait passively for users, managers, or customers to report problems.
- They can try to monitor all aspects of system performance manually.
- They can use a range of tools to monitor various discrete parts of the system and try to coordinate all the data.
ELM Enterprise Manager lets administrators take an automated approach to managing their Windows Server infrastructure. Whether they use ELM in its out-of-the-box configuration or take advantage of its great capacity for customization, administrators rely on ELM Enterprise Manager to notify them of activity or problems using a wide variety of methods, including customizable beeps and multimedia sound files, network pop-up messages, SMTP or MAPI email, instant messaging, posting to Web forms, alpha-numeric and numeric pagers, SNMP traps, and user-written batch files, command files, or applications. In addition, ELM´s support of SNMP enables it to interoperate with other enterprise management systems, such as Microsoft Operations Manager. ELM Enterprise Manager lets administrators:
- Monitor Windows Servers´ event logs, processes, and services in real time;
- Collect and store event log entries for analysis, auditing, and alerting;
- Collect and store published performance counters, including published performance counters, for baselining, trending, and capacity planning;
- Create top-level and drill-down reports of event data and performance data;
- Send and receive alert notifications when events occur, services fail, or performance exceeds thresholds;
- Automatically restart failed services;
- Stop and start services locally and remotely;
- Kill processes locally and remotely;
- Process and forward SNMP traps;
- And more...
