What is Service Explorer and why do I need it? |
Everyone knows that NT/2000 services can log on as a user. The problem is that the username and password for each service is stored locally for each system. This poses a problem when you are required to change that account's password - you may have hundreds or thousands of systems on your network that use that account to log in as a service.
You would manually have to go into the control panel/services on each system and reset the username and password. This is one reason why the passwords rarely get changed on these accounts, thus posing a security threat.
Service Explorer steps in and allows you to select hundreds of systems and change the username and password on a service with ONE operation. This timesaving alone makes Service Explorer worth every dime.

Can I start and stop services with Service Explorer? |
Yes, Service Explorer does everything that the Service Control Manager does and more. You can start and stop multiple services on several systems with one operation. You can easily browse your network and connect to any system and remotely manage their services with ease.
What about my Task Scheduler jobs? Can Service Explorer change those accounts too? |
Absolutely. You can set the account on any task created through the task scheduler that ships with Windows 2000 or Internet Explorer 5 or later with the Offline Browsing Pack.
Does this mean I can create new tasks and manage existing ones? |
Yes. Service Explorer allows you to create a new task on any computer, not just your own. Additionally, you can remove a task from any computer or change the properties of any task on any computer. Essentially, we've centralized task management for you!
Is there a way to find all the services and tasks that use a certain account? |
Yes. Service Explorer can search your entire network and find all services and tasks that meet specific criteria. You can locate services and tasks based on service/task name or the account name the service/task runs under.
I can't seem to remove a service through the native NT/2000/XP tools. Can Service Explorer help? |
People often have the need to remove a service from a server or workstation. The native tools that come with the operating system do not allow you to remove services. With Service Explorer, it's as easy as a point & click.
What operating systems does Service Explorer run on? |
Service Explorer runs on all versions Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 2000, Windows 2003, as well as Windows XP.
Does Service Explorer process services on multiple servers simultaneously? |
Yes. Service Explorer is a multi-threaded application that will process all servers simultaneously up to a user-specified number. Services on the same server are not processed simultaneously due to service dependency issues.
Does Service Explorer require client software or agents to be installed? |
No. Service Explorer accomplishes all of its functions without the need for agent or client software to be installed on computers to be managed. All remote computer services can be handled by a single workstation.
